The Sound of Color is a collaborative project launched by Gap.

The idea was brilliantly simple: colors for inspiration, music for emotions, and videos to suggest a visual representation of such feelings.

So we have 5 colors, 5 musicians, and 5 directors who give their own unique interpretation of a specific color.

The result? An interesting medley of creative art. You can view the video clips and download these songs from the website, which has this neat little color spectrum slider that marks the colors along with the musician and song. Also check out the interviews with the artist and watch the clips on the making of. How all the different colors brings a different meaning for everyone involved is pretty cool. And listening to the songs they are pretty varied for the most part.

RedDntel, Turning red.

YellowMarié Digby, Paint me in your sunshine.

GreenSwizz Beatz, Candy green.

Blue - The Blakes, Magic.

Black and WhiteThe Raveonettes, Black/White.

Lacking my own musical talent or the resources for a real video clip, here’s me making do with word association. First thing that comes to mind when I think of:

Red – This is a no-brainer, blood.

YellowStars. And then Coldplay.

Green - This greenish coat my roommate has. Which is like really, really green and I could never pull off wearing something like that.

Blue - Sky. Not the natural phenomena but the song; For blue skies. The one by Strays Don’t Sleep.

Black and WhiteCalvin & Hobbes.

Hmm I know that Calvin & Hobbes have strips in color on the Sunday spreads. It’s just that the black and white ones are the ones I can’t forget, for whatever reason.

Anyways, I’m putting up Marié Digby’s video of her song here.

Because it’s sadly true how you can’t have sun without shadows.

Because it is touching how all these little things around you could transform into art with just a little imagination.

And because it’s cute that she thinks sunshine and I think stars :)

Well what do these colors make you think of?

  1. I love those organ setups where the keys are linked to bright multicolored lights that switch on when the notes are played. It’s like a rainbow of sound.

that’s sort of the color of sound effect

  2. i knoww it’s like a complete experience, right? you can just drown in the music right there :)
